You know, if we really want vampires as a queer allegory, we really are missing out on stories where vampires and Catholics work together and are normal friends. Give me the allegory of a Catholic whose very beliefs are so, clearly real but also hurt their vampire friend in an equally real manner. Give me them trying to understand not how to combat the reality the Catholic believes in as evil or whatever, nor come to the conclusion that God is an evil/vindictive being, but that He IS good and true and wonderful. Give me the vampire wrestling with their very nature being broken according to a good God. Give me the vampire either coming to the conclusion that he wants nothing to do with God, but from a place where they enjoy their vampire nature and have come to accept it as something irreplaceable, that they believe it's good apart from God. Or give me that vampire come to the conclusion that the goodness of God that is so lethal to them is also lethal to normal humans, it's just more evident and obvious with them. Give me them having to fight for their place in the church, and their Catholic friend doing the same, because the body of Christ excludes no sinner because they aren't defined by their sin anymore and are called children of God. But give me them also being so exhausted by the discrimination and hatred and outright threats to end their life, or the church telling the vampire that God hates them and will burn them as soon as they step foot on "holy ground of church." Give me them finding a balance between accepting that they never will "be a normal whole human" and being okay with that while also recognizing that particular vampire nature of theirs IS broken. But when it stopped being their defining feature, their identity, it stopped hurting so much in the face of God. Yeah, garlic still burns it. So does holy water and most holy objects. Consecrated ground is an iffy subject, too, as is blood and communion and sunlight. Because, like it or not (and character arc says they accept who they are without letting it define them), they're still a vampire.

You know. Maybe an alternate take on vampire as queer allegory.

Edit: the app launched and Is down- I have the initial apology video in a post here and I’m working on getting a full archive of their TikTok up ASAP. I’m letting the rest of this post remain since I do still stand by most of it and also don’t like altering things already in circulation.

Warning for criticism and what I’d consider some harsh to outright mean words:

So I’ve just been made aware of the project known of as ‘lore.fm’ and I’m not a fan for multiple reasons. For one this ‘accessibility’ tool complicates the process of essentially just using a screen reader (something native to all I phones specifically because this is a proposed IOS app) in utterly needless and inaccessible ways. From what I have been seeing on Reddit they have been shielding themselves (or fans of the project have been defending them) with this claim of being an accessibility tool as well to which is infuriating for so many reasons.

I plan to make a longer post explaining why this is a terrible idea later but I’ll keep it short for tonight with my main three criticisms and a few extras:

1. Your service requires people to copy a url for a fic then open your app then paste it into your app and click a button then wait for your audio to be prepared to use. This is needlessly complicating a process that exists on IOS already and can be done IN BROWSER using an overlay that you can fully control the placement of.

2. This is potentially killing your own fandom if it catches on with the proposed target market of xreader smut enjoyers because of only needing the link as mentioned above. You don’t have to open a fic to get a link this the author may potentially not even get any hits much less any other feedback. At least when you download a pdf you leave a hit: the download button is on the page with the fic for a reason. Fandom is a self sustaining eco system and many authors get discouraged and post less/even stop writing all together if they get low interaction.

3. Maybe we shouldn’t put something marketed as turning smut fanfic into audio books on the IOS App Store right now. Maybe with KOSA that’s a bad idea? Just maybe? Sarcasm aside we could see fan fiction be under even more legal threat if minors use this to listen to the content we know they all consume via sites like ao3 (even if we ask them not to) and are caught with it. Auditory content has historically been considered much more obscene/inappropriate than written content: this is a recipe for a disaster and more internet regulations we are trying to avoid.

I also have many issues with the fact that this is obviously redistributing fanfiction (thus violating the copyright we hold over our words and our plots) and removing control the author should have over their content and digital footprint. Then there is the fact that even though the creator on TikTok SAYS you can email to have your fic ‘excluded’ based on the way the demo works (pasting a link) I’m gonna assume that’s just to cover her ass/is utter bullshit. I know that’s harsh but if it walks like a duck and quacks like a duck it’s probably a duck.

I am all for women in stem- I’ve BEEN a woman in Stem- but this is not a cool girl boss moment. This is someone naive enough to think this will go over well at best or many other things (security risks especially) at worst.

In conclusion for tonight: I hope this person is a troll but there is enough hype and enough paid for web domains that I don’t think that’s the case. There are a litany of reasons every fanfic reader and writer should be against something like this existing and I’ll outline them all in several other posts later.

Do not email their opt out email address there is no saying what is actually happening with that data and it is simply not worth the risks it could bring up. I hate treating seemingly well meaning people like potential cyber criminals but I’ve seen enough shit by now that it’s better to be safe than sorry. You’re much safer just locking all your fics to account only. I haven’t yet but I may in the future if that is the only option.

If anyone wants a screen reader tutorial and a walk through of my free favorites as well as the native IOS screen reader I can post that later as well. Sorry for the heavy content I know it’s not my normal fare.

You chuckled at Blue Slushy Cookie’s enthusiasm for her questions and the answers that she wishes to hear. Red Panna Cotta Cookie didn’t share your sentiment, he sighed at seeing the giddy guardian.

“She just had to ask…”

“I have only left and returned to restore the balance of all things. You are the first Dessert Guardian to ask me about my journey. First…that is a word I have not said in a while. I’ve only had those conversations with Y/N Cookie before in recent times.”

“See? The Sugar Swan likes my question! And you do talk about them with Y/N, Sugar Swan?” I really want to know what you two say to each other!”

“Well, the Sugar Swan doesn’t necessarily fly around Earthbread all the time, she likes to make a pit stop every now and then to rest her wings. And well, that just so happens to be my home, hehe.”

“The Sugar Swan is kind to all beings, but the Sugar Swan is sounding particularly kind to you!

“Y/N Cookie is a good cookie, it’s no surprise to me that the Sugar Swan has taken a liking to them! Do tell us, I’ve been curious on where the Sugar Swan was headed from the desert!”

“I’m going to listen to the Sugar Swan’s and Y/N’s every word! It’s gonna be the longest and most enjoyable story in the world!”

The Sugar Swan went on to tell her travels across the land, one location of note was Y/N Cookie’s house. You occasionally chimed in on her visit there, she had simply stopped to have a little talk with you.

This was about her journey however, so you went ahead and left out the parts where you brushed Sugar Swan’s feathers or the little date you two went on.

You prided yourself in your resolve, but you were just no match for the Sugar Swan and her beauty.

However, there was one cookie that wasn’t present for the story. He was searching for someone first.

“Where did Black Sugar Duck go…it would be nice to hear Y/N’s and Sugar Swan’s story together…”

Whipped Cream Cookie kept looking around until he swore he heard a voice nearby, the voice tinged with envy and jealousy.

“Sugar Swan…So beautiful…Quack….Y/N only looking at her….Quack….”

“Y/N? Black Sugar Duck, is that you? Where are you?”

Whipped Cream Cookie headed in the direction of the voice as it becomes more clear to him. The voice stops for a moment, having Whipped Cream halt in his steps until the voice returned, the hurt in their voice more apparent.

“The Sugar Swan…is so beautiful…But why am I like this…why doesn’t Y/N look at me more…”

“Do they think…I’m ugly….it’s not fair….i want them to look at me always….why am I like this….”

Whipped Cream couldn’t believe what he was hearing. Black Sugar Duck was wrong, Y/N Cookie does like them the way they are, they never thought Black Sugar Duck was ugly!

“Oh, I shouldn’t say that. So what if the Sugar Swan is beautiful….”

“I will become the most beautiful thing in the world! So beautiful that Y/N will never think of the Sugar Swan! Their eyes always be on me! Meant for me!”

“Black Sugar Duck, are you okay?!”

Black Sugar Duck went quiet…before stepping out into view, except…they didn’t resemble the duck Whipped Cream knew, he gasped at the cookie that now stood before him.

Boats: man's oldest foe. These humble holes-in-the-water allowed us to get to delicious fish, visit our friends on distant islands, and move out of our shitty towns. Much like the humble horse, its time as useful transportation has largely ended. Today's boats are recreational vehicles, spoiled by their owners who barely use them and then get upset that they are no longer good at keeping water on the inside when they do.

Because I grew up in a landlocked shithole, I was not able to enjoy boats. They were just something that a lake or theme park owned, and you'd occasionally rent one and pedal it while making quacking noises at the swans. I certainly did not get the appeal, and thought that it might be because I only had 30 minutes before it had to get back on the dock. In recent years, my thinking has evolved: perhaps that time limit was part of it. Maybe boats are meant to be savoured, floating on the water, nobody around you while you contemplate the majesty of nature.

Nope. I was wrong. Rich people also live on the lake, and you can "borrow" their boats for hours upon hours. They don't even know what colour they are, especially at night. I spent the better part of an evening resting beneath the endless skies and amidst the rapidly-cooling water of Lake Bougie, and I came to no greater love of the humble boat. Don't worry, though: I brought another guess.

You see, science dictates that we test each hypothesis individually, to keep from mixing up the results. In this case, if I had gone right to this second step, we wouldn't have known if my increased enjoyment of boating came from sitting out in nature for longer, or adding an 80-horsepower two-stroke Evinrude supercharged outboard motor to the bitch and ramping it off the boat launch. Hey, it says "launch" right in the name. Probably not even a crime.

Gundam Quacks

Nah it's def. "G-Cucks," which is also probably what Char calls everybody born in Earth's gravity well.

I posted a bit about it on busskey, but I've neglected Tumblr. I preemptively stepped away for the past month, but it's about time I return.

It looks pretty crazy. I'm a certified Space Politics Enjoyer, but I like the idea of a Gundam that's more about kids messing around on an O'Neil Cylinder. That said, if any of the "datamining" is accurate, and with Anno involved, I wager there'll be a fair bit of space politics after all. I wasn't very impressed with the space politics in Suisei no Majo, but Anno is one of the few people currently working in anime who I'd trust implicitly with it.

I looked over the staff again just now, and it's got a few funny habaneros in the mix. Like,

"Okay cool some pretty amazing prop/mecha designers both from the old world and new wo- wait Mebae? The Asuka-loving eromanga illustrator and animator? Huh? Is he like…designing mob characters?"

Regarding the mecha, I know people are bitching about the wasp-waisted Eva Gundams, which is fair, but I like some of the other details.

But note all the thrusters, and the pressure vessels for the funnel's propellant. Tomino!Gundam has an interesting relationship with hard SF details about how things work in Anno Centurii Universalis 0079, and it's something Anno in his contributions to Gundam has always appreciated. For instance, in Anno's pass on the spaceship designs, he interprets the wing like protrusions as radiators – the only designs I can think of in anime that have them! Of course, Anno isn't the director of this cartoon – Tsurumaki is – but this funnel speaks to the tone at the top. See also: the fact that the very first thing in the trailer – the thing which the editor of the trailer thought was the most important detail to set the tone for the world of G-Cucks – is the protagonist informing the audience that yes, someone on the staff did the math for how fast a 6.5km diameter O'Neil Cylinder would have to rotate to generate 9.8m/s/s of gravity.

Visually, I think seeing these bigass thrusters fire as these funnels whip around at Holy Shit Gs is quite striking. That's part of why hard SF details are cool: they can inform aesthetics.

I also like how the hero Gundam squares up on the catapult:

I've never really been partial to the idea of robot cat shots, but I think this design looks good squared up on the cat in a way that most Gundams don't. It's a good reminder that robot design in anime isn't just about how it looks in an orthographic view.

Should I go ahead and post the same three or four screencaps that everybody posts from the trailer? Yes!

They are, after all, the best shots in the trailer. I admit, I wasn't taken much by the trailer outside of these few shots when I first saw it, but after rewatching it a few times for this post, I find myself admiring some of the colors and compositions a bit more.

Haro's beanie trailing as it hops alongside Round Girl is good shit.

Just as I think you can feel the Anno in the mecha, the Tsurumaki feels pretty stronk here – but Ash is the Tsurumaki Cop in my extended circle.

Overall, it's not mind blowing exactly, but I'm hopeful. I had to apologize for Metallic Rouge when the trailers dropped and were so underwhelming, but I don't think we're about to get Metallic Ruse'd again. Here's hoping.

Do you think historical romance authors/readers actually want to return to the 18th or 19th centuries? You know, back then when women couldn't own property nor vote, and were heavily dependent on men. Oh, and quack "doctors" outnumbered the legit ones.

This subgenre absolutely romanticizes [definition: make something seem better or more appealing than it really is — in the same fashion video games do] those time periods, particularly the Regency era (yay, balls!), but that doesn't mean the Regency girlies want to live in historical times for reals!

It doesn't mean you don't enjoy it anymore or you hate it. It's just that you don't like a part of it. I myself enjoy Ducktales (2017) and The Legend of the Three Caballeros but there were still a lot of things there I didn't like. And that's okay.
